In
Turkey's extreme north eastern corner
lies a pocket of stunningly beautiful
mountains and valleys, still inhabited
by Georgian descendants.
Along the picturesque Black Sea Coastline
are found numerous churches and castles.
Small mountain villages are a delight
to explore. The eastern valley opposite
Artvin once contained such a wealth of
monasteries that it became known as the
Georgian Mount Athos. Wildlife, including
bears, is plentiful. People are exceptionally
welcoming and helpful. Hot springs delight.
A definite highlight is the 14th century
Sumela Monastery, perched high on a cliff
face 270 meters above a gorge - its setting
makes it look more Tibetan than Turkish.
The
richness of this region is simply astounding.
