North
Central Anatolia
As
yet little known to the 'outside world',
is an absolute delight - full of wonderful
surprises. Just east of Istanbul, and north
to north-east of Ankara, it offers a great
variety of scenery and fascinating sites.

Highlights
of this area include:
-
forests,
mountains, alpine villages and lakes
including the breathtakingly beautiful
Golcuk Lake
-
charming "old world" Safranbolu, a UNESCO
World Heritage Site, with some of the
most beautiful traditional old Ottoman
mansions in Turkey
-
the very picturesque town of Amasya,
which was once the capital of a great
Pontic kingdom around 300BC. Its setting
in a narrow gorge of the Yesilirmak

its traditional wooden Turkish mansions,
or konaks, surrounded by high cliffs
where impressive Pontic rock tombs are
lit at night, makes an unforgettable
sight.
-
Sivas,
which was an important city on the Silk
Road during the Middle Ages, with its
superb 13th century Seljukian architecture,
said to be the finest ever erected.
-
the
marvellous ancient Hittite sites of
Yazilikaya with its two open air rock
sanctuaries, and the vast city of Hattusas
which was the capital of the Hittite
Kingdom (1400-1200 BC).
